Isaac Julien’s Ten Thousand Waves is a multi-screen film work inspired by the 2004 Morecambe Bay tragedy. The artist’s narration does not center on describing this incident. Instead, Julien used it to inspire retrospection and poetic imagination. He infused the artwork with an abundance of Chinese history, folklore, and landscapes, using various filming techniques such montages, documenting, and science fiction to weave together contemporary and ancient narratives, thus creating a modern “epic poem” of China meeting the West, one of globalization.
Lili Reynaud-Dewar’s work is influenced by black and Rastafarian cultures, punk culture, and feminism. She combines various types of media such as print media, performing art, video, sculpture, and installation, and uses a paradoxical discourse of “sexuality and anti-sexuality” to blur the distinctions between body and object, between private space and public space. My Epidemic is a collection of artwork that serves as a continuation of her earlier series of the same title. It was first presented to the audience at the 56th Venice Biennale. The artist quotes and edits authors and texts that have been influenced by AIDS, conveying the impact that this epidemic has had on individuals and social cultures.
