Behind the Curtain

Liang Yuanwei was born in Xi’an in 1977. She lives and works in Beijing. Liang received her BA and MA from the China Central Academy of Fine Arts. Most of her recent paintings commence with replication of patterns of readymade textiles. She would let the patterns slowly develop on the canvas with her emotions and conclude the paintings only when the emotions are communicated.

Liang has exhibited her art at numerous institutions including the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art, Beijing; Berkeley Art Museum; and Foundation Joan Miró, Barcelona. She was also one of the participating artists of the China Pavilion at the 54th Venice Biennale (2011). Her recent solo exhibitions include Behind the Curtain, presented by K11 Art Foundation (2017); Oval at Xi’an OCAT (2015); and The Tension between a Bow and an Elephant at Pace London (2014). Her group exhibitions include My Generation: Young Chinese Artists (Tampa Museum of Art; Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg; Orange County Museum of Art, 2014–2015) and Focus Beijing: De Heus-Zomer Collection at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam (2014).
