Raúl de Nieves
Collaborated Project:
Raúl de Nieves was born in Morelia in 1983, and he now lives and works in New York. De Nieves is a multimedia artist, performer, and musician. He left Morelia for San Diego at the age of nine and has since lived in America. His body of work encompasses narrative painting, large-scale figurative sculpture, ornamentally crafted garments, and multimedia performance. He questions the idea of disposability in contemporary culture and the interchangeable identities of mass-produced objects, from textiles and garments to beads and other decorative materials, by transmuting those objects into beautiful objects with new meanings. De Nieves’s artistic style is hugely informed by his childhood memories of watching indigenous people such as the Huichols creating colourful beadwork and yarn paintings with painstaking care, displaying his pride in the artistry of his native land.
De Nieves has exhibited widely in America and other countries. His most recent solo show, Raúl de Nieves: Fina, was presented in the Cleveland Museum of Art this year. Group exhibitions featuring him include the 2017 Whitney Biennial at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York and Greater New York at MoMA PS1, New York (2015).
